Missed the last issue?
If you’ve ever worked in retail leadership, you already know the truth: Some days feel like a strategic masterclass. Most days feel like a fire drill that never ends. And according to Steve Worthy, Founder, Worthy Retail Global, and Host of the Retail Leadership with Steve Worthy podcast, that’s exactly why so many strong leaders fall into what he calls leadership traps.
The Leadership Problem No One Wants to Admit
If you’ve ever led a retail team, you’ve probably had that moment where you stare at the schedule, the KPIs, or the attendance log and think, “What is happening here?”
The classic assumption is that you’re dealing with a performance issue. Or a staffing issue. Or a motivation issue. Or maybe Mercury is in retrograde and the universe is personally targeting your store.
But according to Ron Thurston, the real issue is usually much simpler. And much more uncomfortable.
You don’t have a performance problem. You have a pride problem.
Ron joined us on the latest Blade to Greatness podcast episode to dive into this important concept and leadership skill.

Fear Is Fast. Pride Is Strong.
Ron has spent decades leading teams, writing about retail culture, and studying what actually makes people show up with energy instead of dread. His conclusion is refreshingly blunt.
Fear-based leadership works… for about five minutes. It’s the microwaved burrito of leadership styles. Quick, hot, and guaranteed to fall apart the second you touch it.
Pride-based leadership, on the other hand, is slow-cooked. It takes intention. It takes curiosity. It takes actually knowing what your people are good at.
But when pride shows up, everything changes.
What Pride-Based Leadership Actually Looks Like
Ron breaks it down into something surprisingly practical. Pride isn’t a motivational poster or a corporate value statement. It’s a daily practice built on three things:
1. Ownership
People feel proud when they know their strengths and get to use them. Leaders who identify and optimize human potential create teams that want to contribute, not teams that are scared to mess up.
2. Connection
Trust isn’t built through policies. It’s built through conversations. Real ones. The kind where people tell you the truth because they know you’ll actually listen.
3. Optimism
Fear says, “If you don’t hit this number, bad things happen.” Pride says, “Imagine what we could do if we invested in your strengths.” One drains energy. The other fuels it.
The Retail Twist: Smaller Teams, Bigger Stakes
Ron points out something every retail leader already feels in their bones. Teams are smaller. Workloads are heavier. Expectations are higher.
When one person leaves, it’s not a small gap, it’s a canyon.
And here’s the kicker: Pride is the single most effective way to reduce turnover.
People don’t leave leaders who make them feel proud of their work. They leave the ones who make them feel replaceable.
The KPI No One Tracks (But Should)
You can measure conversion, UPT, traffic, shrink, and a dozen other metrics. But pride? That one shows up in the behaviors between the numbers.
People who feel proud:
Show up early
Stay engaged
Take ownership
Deliver better customer experiences
Stick around
People who don’t feel proud: Well… you’ve seen that movie.
The Pivot: From Fear to Pride
Ron’s advice is deceptively simple. If you want to shift from fear-based leadership to pride-based leadership, start with self-reflection.
Ask yourself:
What’s working?
What’s not?
What am I doing that creates fear?
What am I doing that creates pride?
What strengths am I ignoring on my team?
And then, this is the hard part, listen to the answers.
Why This Matters Now
AI is reshaping retail faster than anyone expected. Technology is accelerating. Roles are shifting. The future is uncertain.
But human potential? That’s still the differentiator.
Pride-based leadership isn’t just a feel-good philosophy. It’s a strategy for building resilient, future-ready teams in a world where everything else is changing.
