Merchandising has always been the “hub of the wheel” in retail. It’s where creativity meets analytics, where instinct meets spreadsheets, and where the right product decisions determine whether a retailer thrives or struggles. In the latest episode of The Retail Razor Show, hosts Ricardo Belmar and Casey Golden dive into the transformational impact Agentic AI is having on merchandising and buying in retail. Joining them are special guests, Jeffrey Fish, Co-CEO and Founder of intelo.ai, and Noah Herschman, Strategic Industry Advisor to intelo.ai.
From BrandsMart COO to Spinjoy: Bobby Johnson’s People-Centered Journey
What does it take to rise from the shop floor to the C-suite in one of the toughest industries out there? For Bobby Johnson, former COO of BrandsMart and now co-founder of Spinjoy, a new wash-and fold laundry service in partnership with Walmart, the answer is simple: people.
In our latest episode of the Retail Razor: Retail Transformers Podcast, Bobby shares how his people-first leadership philosophy shaped decades of success, and why you can’t “AI leadership.”
“If CEOs think that you can AI leadership, you can’t. It’s people. People change, and you’re gonna have to look at that. I’ve done it in my career […] had a 25-year-old and said, ‘this guy can be a leader one day.’ AI can’t do that.”
Building Loyalty That Lasts Decades
Bobby’s career at BrandsMart spanned over 30 years, where he grew profitability from under $10M to over $40M annually and scaled operations to over a billion in sales volume.
But what stands out most is the loyalty he built with his team.
His direct reports averaged 25+ years of tenure — a rarity in retail.
“I think your employees need to know that you have them. In my world, they understood I ran a company, but I put them second always before myself. Once people understand you’ve got ’em, they have you too.”
That philosophy carried his team through the 2008 recession, hurricanes in Florida, and the chaos of COVID. Bobby recalled one employee who showed up to work after a hurricane destroyed his condo roof and car:
“He drove his motorcycle to work. I said, ‘Errol, what are you doing here?’ He told me what happened, and I said, ‘I got you. Go on.’ That’s what mattered — the people.”
Mentorship That Never Ends
Bobby has mentored two to three people every year throughout his career, and those relationships continue long after employees move on.
“Even today, I got a call from somebody I mentored early. He didn’t stay — worked for us four or five years — but we still keep in touch. They call me Bubba. My name’s Bobby, but they all did. Those relationships never end if you’ve truly mentored them well.”
This mentorship philosophy is central to his leadership style: putting people ahead of himself, guiding them through both professional and personal challenges, and building trust that lasts decades.
Spinjoy: Reimagining Everyday Services
After BrandsMart was sold, Bobby turned his focus to a new challenge: Spinjoy, a wash-and-fold laundry service inside Walmart.
“We’re going to offer everyone a good-priced wash-and-fold service that’s convenient for everyone to get to. Once people understand they get three or four hours of their week back, it’s going to be huge.”
Spinjoy is designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life, offering 90-minute turnaround, curbside pickup, and delivery through Walmart+. For parents waiting in school pickup lines or families juggling sports schedules, Spinjoy is about giving back time.
“I went by a school earlier today, and parents were sitting in line an hour and a half before school let out. They could drop off their laundry, pick up their kids, and pick it up — all in that same timeframe.”
We dive in deeper on what attracted Bobby to Spinjoy and how he’s transitioning from a major retailer, like BrandsMart, to a startup, like Spinjoy.
Why Bobby Johnson’s Story Matters
Whether you’re a retail leader, startup founder, or corporate innovator and disrupter, Bobby’s journey details the impact one leader can have across not just a major business, but across every member of your team. Bobby’s insights are invaluable to future retail leaders and includes many lessons:
Resilience in Retail: Navigating the 2008 recession and COVID without losing his team, focusing on the people as much as the business.
Mentorship That Lasts: Building loyalty through authentic, human-centered leadership.
Culture at Scale: Transplanting BrandsMart’s culture from Florida to Atlanta by personally interviewing every hire and promising those relocated they can come back.
Innovation with Spinjoy: Partnering with Walmart to disrupt laundry services and give customers back time in their busy schedule.
Join the Transformation…
Bobby Johnson reminds us that retail transformation isn’t about chasing trends or technology alone.
It’s about building authentic relationships that stand the test of time.
“Once your staff knows that you have them, they become part of that organization. That’s when the organization wins.”
Whether you’re an industry veteran or a newcomer exploring the field, Bobby Johnson’s insights are both timely and timeless.
They’ve inspired us, and we hope they inspire you too.
