Retail’s Best Kept Secret: RetailROI’s Remarkable Impact on Children in Need
Retail is more than transactions. It’s more than technology.
At its best, retail is about people—and about community. Few organizations embody that truth more powerfully than the Retail Orphan Initiative (RetailROI).
In this special replay episode of The Retail Razor Show, we shine a spotlight on RetailROI’s extraordinary accomplishments and the event that has become retail’s most meaningful gathering: RetailROI’s Super Saturday at NRF.
🌍 Why RetailROI Matters
The statistics are staggering:
If orphans were a country, they would be the 8th largest nation in the world.
In the U.S., foster care children that age out of the system and lack permanence having been served by more than one social worker, within 18 months:
85% of boys aging out of foster care will be homeless, in prison, or dead
Over 70% of the girls are pregnant, homeless or in prison
25% of prison inmates spent time in foster care.
RetailROI exists to change those outcomes.
Since 2010, the organization has:
Funded 281 projects in 28 countries - $4.24m in grants
Built or remodeled 23 schools and homes
Installed 31 computer labs
Rescued 1,400+ women and children from trafficking
Supported 1,700+ adoptions
Provided clean water through 16 wells and projects
Impacted the lives of over 325,000 children
And here’s the most inspiring part:
much of this impact comes from the collective power of the retail industry—retailers, solution providers, and partners—coming together to give back.
🛍️ The Power of Super Saturday
Every January, before the NRF Big Show kicks off, RetailROI hosts Super Saturday in New York City.
It’s not just another conference. It’s a day where:
Retailers attend for free—and their presence alone helps drive sponsorships that fund life-changing projects.
Vendors and solution providers sponsor—fueling the resources RetailROI deploys globally.
Attendees hear powerful stories—from foster youth who beat the odds, to global charities creating sustainable change.
Industry leaders connect—in a room filled with heart, not hard sells.
Past keynotes included Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC, who grew up in foster care himself. His story is a reminder of what’s possible when someone believes in you.
As Greg Buzek, RetailROI’s founder, says: “Just by showing up, you’ll help 250 children get clean water, 200 children receive education for a year, and hundreds more gain life and computer skills.”
Then there are stories like that of Grace in Liberia—an orphan impacted by Ebola who, through RetailROI’s initiative, received a $250 Chromebook that transformed her educational journey.
That Chromebook allowed her to complete high school and go on to college. From there she become a teacher - returning to teach other children in her community that shared similar experiences to her own.
Grace’s trajectory underscores the difference a small intervention can make and how it ripples throughout a community.
Each year, Super Saturday surfaces unique stories like Grace’s, and Darryl’s, that show us how the retail industry transcend transactions and reach new heights in empowering and lifting up those in need to not only serve their own communities, but in turn to lift up others around them.
