Every so often, a conversation reminds you why you started a podcast in the first place. This week’s episode with Dave Finnegan did exactly that. It pushed us far beyond the usual AI talking points and into the heart of what it means to be human in a time of massive change. Dave has a way of grounding complex ideas in real lived experience, and this episode became one of those rare moments where you feel the industry shifting under your feet as you talk.
Retail Year in Review: AI, Consumer Shifts & The Future of Commerce
Every December we reflect and think that we have a clear picture of how the year unfolded in retail. Then we sit down to review our conversations across the Retail Razor Podcast Network of shows and realize the story was far more complex, far more human, and far more revealing than any trend report could capture.
This year was no exception.
For our Season Five finale of The Retail Razor Show, we invited Alicia Esposito from Future Commerce to take the host chair and guide Ricardo and Casey through a true 2025 year in review. What emerged was a conversation that connected the dots across all four shows in our network and revealed the deeper cultural and behavioral shifts shaping the future of commerce.
With this newsletter we want to close out Season 5 by sharing some of those threads with you.
AI Was Everywhere, But the Real Story Was Balance
Alicia opened the episode with a line that set the tone for the entire conversation. She said she was excited to see how we “got below the AI hype and unpacked the nuance of the role it plays in our professional lives.”
That was the story of 2025.
Not AI as a headline.
AI as a tool that forced us to rethink leadership, creativity, and clarity.
When we talked about our Blade to Greatness episodes, we found ourselves returning to something Ron Thurston said. He reminded us that many leaders confuse clarity with more information. As Ricardo said in the episode,
“Sometimes more just creates confusion and it does the opposite of bringing clarity even when you’re using AI.”
That tension defined the year.
AI gave us speed and scale, but it also challenged us to stay human.
Consumers Wanted Efficiency and Emotion at the Same Time
One of the most interesting themes Alicia brought up was the return of analog joy. She pointed out that younger consumers are embracing “dumb tech” and DIY moments, even as they use AI to streamline research and discovery.
Casey captured this perfectly when she said,
“You can’t keep automating and making it so convenient and so seamless that you literally deleted shopping and all the fun.”
That line sticks with you.
Because it reflects something we saw again and again this year. Consumers want efficiency, but they also want meaning. They want speed, but they also want connection. They want the answer, but they also want the experience.
This is why stores still matter.
This is why community still matters.
This is why brand storytelling still matters.
Marketplaces Rewrote the Playbook
We spent a lot of time this year talking about marketplaces, and for good reason. They became cultural forces, not just commerce engines.
Our conversation with Chris Carl from AliExpress was a standout. He showed us how a marketplace can create joy, community, and discovery without a single physical store. As Ricardo said in the episode, “They very successfully mastered social commerce and gamified everything.”
And then there was the fast fashion and tariff conversation. Casey summed up the challenge perfectly.
“Cheap is no longer cheap. Now I’m getting cheap for expensive price.”
Marketplaces thrived, but they also forced consumers to rethink value.
Brand Value Became the New Battleground
One of our favorite moments in the episode was when we talked about Naturepedic. Their entire business is built on trust, transparency, and values. They are not the lowest price. They are not the fastest shipper. But they are the brand consumers return to because they know exactly what they stand for.
As Ricardo said in the episode, “The value for their customer is the values of the brand.”
That is the shift. Not price. Not convenience. Value. Real value. Emotional value.
Values‑driven value.
This is the loyalty shakeout we have been talking about for years, and it finally arrived.
Retail Media Evolution in Commerce Trends
We had a lively discussion on the future of retail media and commerce platforms. Ricardo raised an often overlooked point, “The pie is always growing, right? It’s not fixed... you’re not really fighting for the same attention. You’re just fighting for new attention.”
Casey reflected on the omnipresence of commerce in daily life, stating whimsically, “I think we just live in a mall.”
We considered the potential saturation of retail media, cautioning against overwhelming consumers in their pursuit of community and engagement.
What happens to the brand value and brand to consumer relationship when everything is essentially there to take money from you, and is something you can buy?
When media becomes commerce, every visual asset, digital asset, all becomes an ad. It’s all shopping!
The Culture Shift Is Bigger Than the Tech Shift
Casey said something that we think will define 2026. She said, “I feel like society is going through a larger technology culture shift than businesses.”
She’s right.
Consumers are evolving faster than the industry. They are experimenting faster. They are adapting faster. They are rejecting faster. They are embracing faster.
Retailers are still catching up.
And that society to business gap is where the opportunity lives.
Looking Ahead to 2026
If we had to summarize the year in two words, they would be velocity and joy.
Velocity, because everything is moving faster.
Joy, because consumers are searching for it in every interaction.
The brands that win in 2026 will be the ones that deliver both.
