Unplugged & Unscripted: RetailClub's AI-First Event Revolution

In the latest episode of The Retail Razor Show, we welcome back Krystina Gustafson, Co-founder & Chief Content Officer of RetailClub. Krystina joins us to offer an insider’s look at RetailClub’s AI Deepdive Retreat event — a groundbreaking event curated to reshape the concept of the retail conference and foster retail's first AI-native community.

🔍 What Makes RetailClub Different

Krystina introduces us to the ambitious vision behind RetailClub:

"We're planning our inaugural event, the AI Deep Dive Retreat, aiming to create retail's first AI-native community."

Instead of cavernous halls, endless vendor booths, and racing between panels, RetailClub creates an intentionally intimate, highly curated environment. Each attendee is there for a reason, contributing to a carefully balanced mix of retail executives, technology innovators, and thought leaders.

Hosted at Huntington Beach, CA, the retreat is set to gather 500 AI champions and change-makers, shaping the future landscape of both retail and technology.

Krystina’s vision challenges the industry’s “bigger is better” mentality by focusing on:

Curated Attendee Lists: Every participant is hand-picked to ensure quality connections.
Conversation-First Formats: Interactive roundtables and peer-to-peer sessions replace long keynote marathons.
Depth Over Breadth: Rather than covering every trend at a high level, sessions dive deep into the most pressing issues facing retail today.
No Hard Sells: The absence of vendor pitches creates space for authentic exchange and idea-sharing.

The result? The AI Deep Dive Retreat rejects the classic mega-conference model. Instead, it emphasizes intimate, curated experiences where attendees can deeply engage with content and peers. As Krystina notes,

"We believe some of the most interesting conversations happen when the session is over...So, we're leaning heavily into it."

For those skeptical about typical conference structures, this retreat is not just a reshuffling but a reinvention, offering both expert-led workshops and more open, dialogue-driven sessions like their "breakthrough talks" and "breakthrough experiences."

It’s an event where connections turn into partnerships, and where conversations go beyond the conference stage into lasting collaborations.

🤖 AI-First by Design

RetailClub isn’t just talking about AI in retail — it’s weaving it into the fabric of every discussion.

Differentiating from traditional conferences, RetailClub's AI Deep Dive Retreat is crafted to engage participants in every facet of AI. Krystina mentions:

"We want every single session, every single interaction, … to be focused on AI… We're having about 50 plus different topics…, every single one discusses a different use case of AI… tailored to both short-term and long-term perspectives."

From how AI is enabling precision demand forecasting to creating new levels of customer personalization, Krystina reveals that AI is not an isolated breakout topic — it’s the common thread tying the entire agenda together.

This approach ensures attendees leave not just inspired, but equipped with practical, actionable AI strategies tailored to retail’s realities.

🧠 Exploring Retail's AI Transformation

The discussion highlights an ongoing challenge: embracing AI while preserving brand identity. Krystina acknowledges,

"AI definitely ups the ante on some of the trouble that retailers can get into... a hundred percent something brands need to be talking about."

Moreover, the conversation touches on significant ROI within retail's back-end processes.

Real results can be seen in customer insights and using synthetic data for faster product development.

🔮 Looking Ahead: Agentic AI & Future-Proofing Retail

One of the episode’s most forward-looking moments comes when the discussion shifts to agentic AI — AI systems capable of autonomously acting on goals with minimal human intervention.

Krystina, and hosts Ricardo and Casey, explore how this could reshape retail operations in the next five years:

Autonomous Merchandising Decisions: AI agents adjusting product assortments in real time based on hyper-local data.
Supply Chain Optimization on the Fly: Intelligent systems rerouting inventory and logistics without manual oversight.
Next-Level Customer Engagement: Personalized offers, content, and service driven by AI agents that “understand” individual shoppers’ needs.

While still emerging, the consensus is clear — agentic AI will become a competitive differentiator for retailers who adopt it early and strategically.

In an intriguing closing discussion about AI's future in retail, Krystina points out,

"It's going to literally transform every way that you interact with technology going forward."

This speaks to the inevitable shift towards AI-augmented experiences across all retail platforms, predicting a customer journey that's both efficient and personalized.

🎧 Final Thoughts and an Invitation

This episode is an open invitation to join this transformational journey at the AI Deep Dive Retreat. Krystina notes the registration deadline of August 22nd, and adds, "Retailers and brands qualify for up to $1,250 in travel reimbursement."
