Gareth Johns Reveals the Real Reason Shoppers Walk Out
Retailers obsess over foot traffic, dwell time, and basket size.
But what about the people who walk in… and walk out without buying?
In the Season Two kickoff of The Retail Razor: Data Blades podcast, we sit down with Gareth Johns, Chief Data Officer at TruRating, to unpack one of the most misunderstood — and most powerful — metrics in retail: conversion.
“Many retailers sort of ignore it. They think it’s too complicated… or it’s just too hard to measure.” — Gareth Johns
It’s a topic that never ceases to jazz up any retail executive’s roster! So, get ready to twirl through data factoids and actionable insights with our guest, Gareth Johns!
📊 The Conversion Conundrum - Retail’s Biggest Untapped Opportunity
Conversion isn’t just a buzzy metric; it’s the pivotal point that can make, or break, retail performance. As Casey puts it, conversion is, “the metric that makes or breaks performance, and yet it’s still one of the biggest mysteries in retail.”
Why do shoppers breeze in and out, leaving behind no more than a soft gust of wind if they don’t convert?
For fashion, footwear, and specialty retailers, conversion rates often hover around 15–20%. That means up to 85% of shoppers walk out without buying — and most retailers have no idea why.
Gareth shares how TruRating’s real-time shopper feedback model, captured at the point of sale, flips the script on traditional methods like exit surveys, QR codes, and focus groups.
“We’re up to over a billion ratings now… and what we’ve learned is that staff availability, store layout, and customer expectations play a much bigger role in conversion than most retailers realize.”
The Quest for Feedback: Tales of Curiosity
What stops customers from buying, you wonder? While cornering shoppers for exit surveys might have you labeled a lurking salesperson, it won’t uncover the whole truth. The answer lies in capturing perspectives as close to the interaction point as possible. Enter TruRating’s unique approach: questions posed directly on the payment pin pad. Talk about being in the moment!
Of course, we all wish for the ideal scenario as Gareth described,
“The perfect world is to hear from every non-shopper at the end to understand why they didn’t purchase.”
Then again, when’s the last time you wanted to gush about your non-buying choices as you rushed out the door to a store?
Didn’t think so!
🛍️ Case Study: $16.7M in Revenue from an 8% Lift in Conversion
One footwear brand partnered with TruRating to analyze conversion across stores. The insights were eye-opening:
Stores with similar foot traffic and staffing levels had wildly different perceptions of staff availability.
Staff behavior — not just headcount — was the key differentiator.
By focusing on low-performing stores and improving staff attentiveness, the brand saw an 8% lift in conversion, unlocking $16.7 million in revenue opportunity.
“It’s not just about throwing money at the problem,” Gareth explains. “You have to crack the behaviors first.”
Stores were challenged to tailor their staffing not only by revenue but by the actual foot traffic — the number of potential customers browsing the aisles.
Staff and Strategy: The Winning Combination
And speaking of staff, they’re not just the friendly faces of the brand, they’re the champions of conversion.
“Staff need to realize how big an impact they can have,” Gareth emphasizes.
It’s time to shine the spotlight on these unsung heroes; a few shifts in engagement can work wonders on conversion rates.
So, to our sharp, data-driven, and AI-harnessing retailers out there, the message is clear: focus on action! Exciting insights or complicated calculations won’t make those registers sing.
