Missed the last issue?
If your retail media strategy still revolves around last-touch ROAS and a few sponsored product placements, we’ve got news: it’s time for a glow-up. In our latest episode of The Retail Razor Show, we sat down with retail media’s top analyst and strategist Andrew Lipsman to talk about the two biggest forces reshaping the retail media landscape in 2026: connected TV and off-site retail media.
Retail Leadership Isn’t a Fire Drill… So Why Do We Treat It Like One
If you’ve ever worked in retail leadership, you already know the truth:
Some days feel like a strategic masterclass.
Most days feel like a fire drill that never ends.
And according to Steve Worthy, Founder, Worthy Retail Global, and Host of the Retail Leadership with Steve Worthy podcast, that’s exactly why so many strong leaders fall into what he calls leadership traps. These traps don’t show up with flashing warning signs. They sneak in quietly, disguised as “being helpful” or “being thorough” or “being the only person who can get this done before 5 PM.”
Sound familiar?
In our latest episode of the Blade to Greatness podcast, Steve joined us to talk about his upcoming book Simplify to Lead and why retail leadership has become a magnet for overthinking, perfectionism, and doing way too much. And yes, he explains why leaders keep repeating the same patterns even when they know better.
Spoiler: it’s not because they’re bad leaders. It’s because the system rewards the wrong behaviors.

The Trap Retail Leaders Fall Into First: Doing Everything Themselves
Steve calls it the “task over people” trap.
Retail leaders are wired to get things done. Fast. Yesterday, if possible.
But when you start treating people like tools instead of humans, the whole system breaks. You get burned out. Your team gets frustrated. And your calendar becomes a museum of meetings that should’ve been emails.
Steve’s take:
“When you over‑index on tasks, you start to dehumanize the people doing the work.”
Ouch. Accurate.
The Trap That Sneaks Up Next: Rigid Ideologies
This one hits harder than most leaders want to admit.
You know that leadership style you inherited from your favorite boss ten years ago?
Yeah… it might not work anymore.
Steve shares a story in the episode about losing a high‑potential leader because he didn’t evolve fast enough. It’s a painful reminder that retail leadership requires constant reinvention, not nostalgia for the way things used to be.
The Trap That Feels Productive (But Isn’t): Perfectionism
Retail changes every 24 hours. Sometimes every 24 minutes. Sometimes faster.
So why do leaders keep trying to make everything perfect?
Steve calls perfectionism a “look at me” trap. It feels like excellence, but it’s actually avoidance dressed up as effort.
His advice:
Stop giving situations more than they cost.
Which leads to our favorite line from the episode…
“Give the situation what it costs. No more, no less.”
This is the kind of leadership wisdom that sounds simple until you try it.
Most leaders overspend their emotional energy on decisions that don’t deserve it. They walk out of a meeting still carrying the frustration at lunch, at their desk, and sometimes all the way home.
Steve argues that great retail leadership requires emotional detachment, not emotional investment.
Not coldness.
Not apathy.
Just clarity.
And Yes, We Still Keep It Fun 🤩
This episode isn’t a lecture. It’s a lively, honest conversation about why retail leadership feels harder than it should and how leaders can simplify without lowering standards.
We talk about:
Why leaders get stuck doing instead of leading
How to shift from execution to strategy
Why approachability is a superpower
And why simplicity is the most underrated leadership skill in retail
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, overworked, or overcommitted, this episode will feel like someone finally said the quiet part out loud.
