Innovation in retail is often painted as glamorous. We picture AI‑powered stores, apps that anticipate customer needs, or futuristic experiences that grab headlines. But as Andy Laudato, COO of The Vitamin Shoppe and author of Fostering Innovation, reminded us in our latest Blade to Greatness podcast episode, the real story of innovation begins in a far less glamorous place: the foundation.
The Consumer Sentiment Gap: Why Surveys Fail and AI Steps In
For decades, retail leaders have leaned on consumer surveys as the ultimate tool to understand shoppers.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
what people say doesn’t always match what they do.
That disconnect, the consumer sentiment gap, has become one of the biggest blind spots in retail and consumer goods. And it’s exactly what we unpack in Season 5, Episode 13 of The Retail Razor Show.
The Story Behind the Gap
When we sat down with Trevor Sumner (CEO of i-Genie AI) and Stan Sthanunathan (Executive Chairman of i-Genie AI, former EVP at Unilever & VP at Coca-Cola), one thing became clear: the old survey-driven models are breaking down.
Stan framed it perfectly with a metaphor that stopped us in our tracks:
“Are you in a committed relationship? Did you administer a five-point scale questionnaire to your partner before you got into it? The answer is invariably no. Big life decisions are taken by listening to your heart. [As a brand] How can I listen to your heart? That is the challenge.”
That’s the essence of the consumer sentiment gap. Surveys capture what people think they should say. But the truth lives in the unfiltered signals: the searches, reviews, social posts, and conversations happening every day.
Why AI Changes the Game
Trevor explained how AI and natural language processing allow us to move beyond surveys:
“We look at millions of keyword searches just in skincare — billions of searches overall — and that has real authenticity. When you triangulate between social, reviews, and search, you get a true picture of what’s happening in the market.”
This isn’t just about big data. It’s about real-time retail intelligence.
Instead of waiting months for survey results, brands can now see how tariffs, pricing changes, or influencer campaigns are shifting consumer perception today.
Augmented Intelligence: AI + Human Insight
Stan reminded us that AI isn’t the whole answer: it’s the amplifier:
“Over reliance on artificial intelligence will result in exponential growth in natural stupidity. The most important thing is to use AI to harness the power of data, then overlay your own knowledge of the business and competitive landscape. That’s augmented intelligence.”
It’s not about replacing human judgment.
It’s about empowering leaders with sharper, faster insights so they can make better decisions. Velocity is the key benefit AI brings to the business!
Why This Matters for Retail Leaders
The consumer sentiment gap isn’t just a research problem.
It’s a leadership problem.
Brands that cling to outdated survey models risk missing the disruptor brands that are reshaping categories.
As Trevor noted, “70% of new market value is created by disruptor brands.”
If you’re not listening to the signals, you’re not seeing the future.
Join us on the journey…
This episode is a wake-up call for anyone in retail, consumer goods, marketing, or product innovation.
Surveys may comfort us with data that feels smart. But the future of retail intelligence lies in listening to the signals consumers are already giving us, and using AI to turn those signals into actionable insights.
As Stan put it best:
“You don’t need sympathy for your customers. You need empathy.”
